Proposed Pittsburgh Ordinance Encourages Green Buildings: Legislation is being introduced that would have the city of Pittsburgh encourage contractors to erect "green" buildings. City Councilman Bill Peduto has submitted a resolution to the city's law department and and planning department to urge developers to use "green" principles in their projects...such as energy efficiency, use of recycled building materials and using redeveloped land. Peduto says in return zoning law exceptions, not financial incentives, would be given to the developers. Green Building Alliance Executive Director Rebecca Flora says studies have shown these buildings encouraged employee productivity and save money in energy costs. Peduto says the law and planning departments have one month to review the specifics of his legislation. Article taken from www.wduq.org.

Giant Eagle takes the LEED: From the outside, there isn't anything particularly special about Giant Eagle's new store in Brunswick, Ohio. The white roof is a bit unusual by Midwestern standards, but that's about it. Step inside, and the story is pretty much the same. Apart from the generous abundance of natural light, it looks like your typical supermarket in nearly every respect. Good looking and easy to shop, yes. But not distinctive. Appearances can be deceiving. The truth is this particular Giant Eagle stands virtually alone in the retail industry for having earned LEED certification… to date, only three U.S. chain retailers-Giant Eagle, Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) and Happy Feet Inc.-can claim [LEED Certification]. "Giant Eagle has been active in the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program for some time," says Jim Lampl, director of conservation for Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh, which operates 150 corporate and 81 independently owned supermarkets. "Building a LEED-certified store was the next logical step for us. It didn't entail that huge a departure from what we had been doing… LEED certification offers outside validation that a building has been built in such a way as to minimize its overall impact on the environment. That validation is important to us at Giant Eagle. We want to be a leader and encourage others to go green, even our competition." Full article in Chain Store Age.

This is the first year that the annual list was announced by Corporate Knights of Toronto, Canada, which publishes the world's only mainstream corporate responsibility magazine.
